About Me

Hi there! I'm Yong Zhi Tan!

I am a graduate student in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Masters of Engineering program. I enjoy designing and building software systems, but my true passion lies in solving problems.

I graduated with highest honors from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelors of Science in Computer Engineering in 2021, and was fortunate enough to be awarded the Bronze Tablet in recognition of my academic achievements.

Born and bred in sunny Singapore, I have spent a majority of my life in a humid, tropical climate. However, I decided to pursue my college education in the United States Midwest, where temperatures regularly drop below freezing.

Book Stop

Book Stop is a web application that allows anyone to search up a particular topic and find the highest rated book for the lowest price. Book Stop will search for the book with the best "bang for your buck", finding a balance between the cost of the book, and the ratings it receives from other readers.

UNIX Operating System

A basic Linux kernel with support for 10 system calls, scheduling, keyboard support, read-only filesystem, exception handling, paging, and i8259 PIC interrupt handling. Also supports a high resolution GUI, audio via SoundBlaster 16 driver, inter-process communication, and a custom debugger.

Makan Tompang

A community app that saves our energy in ordering take-out. Makan Tompang is an app that connects users who want a food delivery (buyers) with users who are already at restaurants (couriers). The app considers the route that the courier would take from the restaurant to their homes/destinations, and suggests buyers whose locations are on their route, in order of how much of a detour they would have to make to get to those buyers.

VR Ant Man Simulator

A Virtual Reality game inspired by Marvel's Ant-Man Simulator. The player can grow/shrink between 3 different sizes and explore a house by completing a series of tasks/puzzles. The game was created using Unity and tested/played with the Oculus Rift S.
